The sporty new model will be available as both a fastback and a Shooting Brake

Volkswagen is expanding its range of sporty ‘R’ models with the arrival of a hot version of its Arteon, which is now available to order.

It’s the first time that the sleek Arteon has been available as a performance model, with the standard fastback model available alongside the newly-introduced Shooting Brake model, which brings even more striking styling and greater practicality.

Powered by the same turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine as the Golf R and Tiguan R, it produces 316bhp and 420Nm of torque, enabling the Arteon R to reach 0-60mph in just 4.7 seconds and reach an electronically-limited top speed of 155mph.

It also features 4Motion four-wheel-drive as standard, as well as a clever ‘R-Performance’ torque vectoring system that can send power to individual wheels when cornering, which aims to ‘virtually eliminate understeer’. An electronic differential lock and adaptive suspension dampers are also included as standard.

Both the Arteon R and Arteon Shooting Brake R sit on 19-inch ‘Adelaide’ alloy wheels, with 18-inch performance brakes and blue brake callipers. All models also get a sportier grille, bumpers and diffuser. More noticeably, the Arteon R can be identified by their quad chrome tailpipes.

Inside, the two cars come with Nappa leather sports seats with blue sitting, along with massaging and electric front seats and a heated steering wheel. Additional blue interior detailing, extended gear shifter paddles and carbon-effect interior inlays help to set it apart from the regular Arteon.

Standard equipment elsewhere is also generous, including digital dials, adaptive LED headlights and Level 2 semi-autonomous driving capability.

Prices for the Arteon R start from £51,615, with the Arteon Shooting Brake R available from £52,435.
