Over half of Brits lack basic car maintenance skills, survey finds

A recent poll of British adults saw more than half admit they don't know how to do basic car maintenance work or checks.

A recent survey has found that just over half of Brits are incapable of undertaking basic maintenance work on a car, such as a tyre change or checking coolant levels.

The online tyre retailer Tyre Shopper quizzed 2,000 British adults and found that 53 per cent didn’t know how to change a car’s tyre in the event of a puncture. 51 per cent of those surveyed didn’t know how to check the coolant levels in their car.

The survey also found that younger Brits aged 18-24 years old have less practical skills than older generations, especially when compared to adults over 55.

Many of the survey’s respondents revealed that they were still heavily reliant on their parents for help with practical problems, as 30 per cent said they would ask their father for assistance and 15 per cent said their mothers would be the first port of call.

Search engines were also popular sources of information, attracting 29 per cent of those puzzled by practical jobs.

A spokesperson for Tyre Shopper said: “It benefits us greatly to teach ourselves how to complete simple household and car repairs. Not only will this make our lives easier, it will also save us a significant amount of money on costly repairs and maintenance charges.”
