Parents spend over £120,000 worth of journey time with their children

A recent survey has found that parents on average rack up nearly 30,000 miles driving their children to various errands before they are 16, spending over £120,000 in total on the journeys in the process.

Recent research has found that the average parent drives for nearly 30,000 miles and racks up more than £120,000 worth in journeys before their children reach the age of 16.

It has also been found that parents spend an average of 11,648 hours driving their children to and from activities before they reach 16. This would cost parents an average of £122.92 per week if they were to charge for their driving like a taxi service.

This is all according to the car insurance company 1st Central, which surveyed 2,000 parents with children under 16.

The school run was found to be the most expensive journey for parents, followed by trips to sports classes or practice in second and shopping trips in third.

Eleven-year-olds were found to be the most demanding of their parents’ time, taking up 19 hours and 48 minutes on average each week.

The Chief executive of 1st Central, Andy James, said: “This survey shows the extent of the service we are providing, and with that much time spent in the car it’s important for parents to feel that their families are covered for any eventuality.

“These days, families go their separate ways so much that the time spent together in the car is actually a good way for parents to connect and catch up with the kids.”
