Peugeot 5008 gets an SUV makeover for 2017

Peugeot has revealed the first details and images for its new-generation 5008, which ditches the boxy MPV looks of its predecessor. The family car instead has the style of a more fashionable SUV and should have plenty of presence on the road.

Aiming to mix MPV practicality with some off-road versatility, the Peugeot 5008 will rival the likes of the Nissan X-Trail, Honda CR-V and Skoda Kodiaq. Compared to the previous 5008, the new model has an identical height of 1.64 metres with roof bars but has grown in length by 19cm.

Details like the upright chrome grille, prominent door creases and protruding side sills give the new 5008 a more muscular and curvaceous look than the previous model.

More muscular and curvaceous

The cabin meanwhile has undergone major changes. Included is a 12.3-inch TFT instrument display and an eight-inch centre console touchscreen. The rear passengers get access to power sockets, blinds and trays on the back of the front seats, plus hooks and their own cup holders.

The new 5008 has seven seats as standard and the third-row seats can be removed. Peugeot has made these rear seats 11kg lighter than they were in the previous 5008 to make their removal easier. If the two rearmost are folded down, boot capacity for the 5008 is measured at a whopping 1,060 litres.

Trim levels for the new 5008 in Britain will start with Active, since the less-equipped Access trim has been ditched for this market. Following Active is Allure, GT Line and the more performance-focused GT trim.

Upgraded interior, new engine range

Engines include a selection of turbocharged petrol and diesel units from launch. On offer is a 1.2-litre petrol with 128bhp, hooked up to a six-speed manual or automatic gearbox. There’s also a 163bhp 1.6-litre petrol that uses the automatic ‘box only, a 99bhp 1.6-litre diesel and 178bhp 2.0-litre diesel. The latter powers the GT model which uses the automatic ‘box only.

Despite the new SUV looks, the 2017 Peugeot 5008 is not offered with a four-wheel drive powertrain and all engines power the front wheels only.

The new Peugeot 5008 will appear at the 2016 Paris Motor Show later this month, before launching in Britain during spring 2017. Pricing will likely range between £25,000 and £30,000.
