Prices announced for powerful Volkswagen T-Roc R

The T-Roc R becomes the only performance SUV in the firm’s current line-up.

Volkswagen has announced prices for its T-Roc R – a new high-performance version of the brand’s best-selling T-Roc crossover.

Using the same powertrain as many performance versions across the Volkswagen Group – such as the Volkswagen Golf R, Cupra Ateca and Audi SQ2 – the T-Roc R features a turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine. It comes paired to a seven-speed DSG automatic transmission, which delivers its power to all four wheels.

This enables it to sprint from 0-60mph in 4.6 seconds, and it would keep going to a claimed top speed of 155mph.

Aside from its engine, it’s separated from standard T-Rocs by its 19-inch Pretoria alloy wheels (the optional, upgraded wheels on the Golf R) along with revised bumpers and quad-exit exhausts. It’s also offered in an exclusive Lapiz Blue shade, too, with all colours accompanied by gloss black accents.

Prices for the T-Roc R start from £38,450 – almost double the price of the entry-level Volkswagen T-Roc, which starts from £20,040.

The new model is only the second performance Volkswagen SUV – the first being the 2008 Touareg R50. It’s also the first time in several years that there will be two VW ‘R’ models on sale when the T-Roc joins the Golf, as well as the only hot SUV in the current range.

Claire Haynes, T-Roc product manager at Volkswagen UK, said: “With the arrival of the R, the T-Roc again demonstrates the impressive versatility of its packaging, with the ability to be a stylish and practical family SUV, a fun-focused Cabriolet or, now, a driver-focussed R sports car.

“With nimble handling, large car space and performance car pace, the T-Roc R really is the consummate all-rounder, and represents the best of the past, present and future of Volkswagen R.”
