Production begins for the 2020 SKODA Kamiq

New Czech SUV is built at Skoda’s main factory in Mladá Boleslav.

Production of the new Skoda Kamiq has begun, with the SUV set to arrive on British shores later this year.

The latest and smallest entry to Skoda’s SUV range is built at the firm’s main factory in Mladá Boleslav in the Czech Republic — its home country. It will be produced alongside the Octavia, Fabia, Scala and Karoq.

Skoda says it has pumped around €100m (£89.82m) into the factory in order to produce the Kamiq, with new tools added alongside updates to its paint shop, body shop and final assembly area. Four hundred examples of the Kamiq are said to leave the Mladá Boleslav each day.

Dr Michael Oeljeklaus, Skoda board member for production and logistics, said: “For us, the start of production for a new Skoda model is always a special time. Over the past few months, we have made all of the provisions in production and logistics to successfully launch the Kamiq in the city SUV segment. We are convinced that – in typical Skoda style – the Kamiq too will impress our customers with its excellent quality and many practical features.”

With order books to open later in 2019, the Skoda Kamiq will be offered with a choice of petrol and diesel engines, boast the firm’s latest corporate design cues and be packed with ‘Simply Clever’ features.
