Renault Captur adds most powerful diesel engine yet

The Renault Captur is getting a new, more powerful diesel engine with 109bhp, but it can also still offer free Vehicle Excise Duty to customers.

The Renault Captur crossover range has been expanded with the introduction of a new 1.5-litre diesel engine, which is more powerful than the diesel unit already available for this car. The new dCi engine will be available to order for the Captur from 1st April 2015.

The Captur is already available with a single 1.5-litre dCi diesel, which delivers 89bhp. The new engine offers 109bhp, meaning the 0-62mph sprint time is reduced from 12.6 seconds to 11 seconds compared to the less powerful diesel. The top speed is also slightly increased with the new diesel engine from 106mph to 109mph.

Even with the extra power and speed, the Captur’s new diesel engine actually matches its 89bhp counterpart when it comes to fuel economy. Both the 89bhp and 109bhp unit record up to 76.4mpg combined.

The new engine’s CO2 emissions output is slightly increased, but at 98g/km it still allows the Captur to qualify for free Vehicle Excise Duty. This is not the case, however, when choosing the Captur’s new engine with the range-topping Signature trim. Here the CO2 output is increased to 101g/km and the combined fuel economy is slightly reduced to 72.4mpg.

The low CO2 outputs are thanks in part to stop-start engine technology, which comes as standard for the new engine. With this, the Captur can swiftly turn off and turn back on the engine while the driver is stationary in traffic.

The new 109bhp diesel will be available for all trim grades above the standard Expression+ trim. The cheapest specification to feature the new diesel engine will be the Dynamique version, which will start at £17,695.
