Renault to follow Volvo’s lead in reducing top speeds

The French firm has announced a raft of safety and environmental pledges

Renault is following in the footsteps of Volvo by introducing a lowered cap on its cars’ top speed.

Set to be introduced on its forthcoming Megane-E, the models will have a top speed limited to 180km/h (112mph), while also having an automatic speed limit adjuster, which will change when the speed limit varies – e.g when entering a town or city. It’s anticipated the speed limiter will be introduced to all Renault and Dacia models, too.

Elsewhere, the French marque will introduce a number of other safety features in a bid to cut collisions. The first, ‘Safety Score’ will encourage safer driving, while ‘Safety Coach’ can inform drivers of dangers and risks on their route, and to adjust their speed accordingly with real-time warnings.

A number of measures also to be introduced will help the emergency services in the event of a collision. A mode called ‘fire-fighter access’ will be introduced on all hybrid and EVs to put out accidental battery fires. Meanwhile a ‘Rescue Code’ aims to speed up the time it takes to get someone out of a crashed vehicle by issuing a special code that helps first responders to both locate the vehicle and access its structural information.

As with many other marques, Renault is stepping up its environmental pledges, with plans to be carbon neutral in Europe in 2040 and worldwide in 2050. More sustainable batteries will also be introduced in electric cars, while also cutting emissions involved in manufacturing.
