Revealed: Hyundai's electric cars offer best real-world range

The South Korean brand has been producing some ground-breaking vehicles, and its current electric vehicles offer the best range around.

Hyundai is offering two of the best all-electric vehicles currently available – the Kona Electric and the Ioniq Electric – that both provide a practical outlay and zero-emission driving.

Both come fitted with excellent technology too, while not costing as much as you might expect for an all-electric vehicle.

Although the range of the car does depend on how you drive and what conditions are like, Hyundai’s EVs have two of the best real-world returns compared to their quoted range on the market.

Here we take a look at each model…

Ioniq Electric

The zero-emission hatchback may not have the greatest range for an electric car on the market – 174 miles – but you are likely to get close to that figure with every charge you use. Priced from £26,745 after the government’s plug-in grant, the Ioniq is well-priced considering the amount of equipment it has on offer and the space available in the cabin.

Energy for the batteries can be recovered from braking or driving downhill so that it continues to be replenished. Not only is the powertrain environmentally-friendly, but so is the cabin, as the materials used are a responsibly-sourced or recycled plastics.

Multiple safety systems are also available, as Ioniq models can be fitted with autonomous emergency braking, blind spot detection, driver attention alert, lane departure warning with lane keep assist and rear cross traffic alert.

On the central infotainment screen, drivers can see how far the current range on the vehicle can take them, and one charge should be more than enough for a week’s worth of commutes or a long drive – with you requiring to stop along the way for a charge to go further afield.

The impressive crossover has a range up to 300 miles – depending on which battery pack you choose – and only costs a little bit more than the Ioniq at the £27,250 starting price. Based on the successful conventionally-powered crossover, the Kona has transferred superbly to electric power and is likely to be a popular choice for many.

Even the lowest battery offering can return 194 miles of range and by using the paddles behind the steering wheel, drivers can choose how much regenerative braking they would like to use. The Kona Electric can be replenished at a rapid charge point that can take the battery pack from empty up to 80 per cent full in 75 minutes.

There are also many safety assists on offer, including autonomous emergency braking, blind spot detection, forward collision warning, hill start assist, lane follow assist, lane keep assist and rear cross traffic alert.

When charging the vehicle, you can also choose when the car starts to take power from the grid – meaning you can save money while charging from home. You can also set how much the Kona is charged at any time.
