Rolls-Royce issues world's smallest recall

Rolls-Royce has issued what’s probably the world’s smallest recall notice, for just a single car.

In a letter issued in the US by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Rolls announced that it was recalling one Ghost due to a technical issue with the car’s airbags.

The letter states: “Rolls BMW of North America is recalling one model year 2015 Rolls-Royce Ghost manufactured on January 23, 2014.

“The affected vehicle has thorax air bags fitted to both front seats that may fail to meet the side impact performance requirements for the front seat occupants. As such, this vehicle may fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 214, 'Side Impact Protection'.”

According to the recall notice, a Rolls-Royce dealer will replace both the driver-side and passenger-side airbags free of charge, which is probably the least they can do given that the car costs £231,730.

The affected car reportedly had left its factory in East Sussex in January last year, but its North American owner hadn’t yet taken delivery of it.

A Rolls-Royce spokesman said that the issue “was due to the incorrect labelling on one of the airbags”, but given the scale of the recall it’s unlikely this one will drag on for that long.

Rolls officially unveiled the Ghost back in 2009, with the current model boasting a meaty 6.6-litre twin-turbo V12 engine and automatic gearbox that can shoot it from 0-62mph in just 4.9 seconds.

Given that even the entry-level car has an electronically-limited top speed of 155mph, it’s probably in the owner’s best interest that they have airbags that work…
