Scottish route named one of top five coastal road trips

A route in Scotland has been named among the five best coastal road trips in the world.

The selection, picked by Travel Now magazine, sees Scotland’s North Coast 500 take an impressive fifth place.

Only opened a couple of months ago, North Coast 500 (also known as NC500), is a route that loops around the very top of Scotland. Running to and from Inverness, the route covers more than 500 miles and covers the most significant landmarks of the North Highlands.

North Coast 500 was created by the North Highland Initiative and is supported by Prince Charles. The route was designed as a way to attract driving enthusiasts, cyclists and walkers to some of the Scotland’s finest scenic areas.

It also aims to showcase local food and accommodation which people might have usually missed had they not driven through this route. It’s described by its creators as Scotland’s answer to America’s Route 66.

Travel Now praised North Coast 500 for its ‘rugged romance’. The four coastal road trips which came ahead of the Scottish route to complete the magazine’s top five are all situated outside of Britain.

The route picked as the world’s best coastal road trip is Cape Overberg in South Africa. This is followed by Italy’s Amalfi Coast, Norway’s Atlantic Road and the Pacific Coast Highway in America.
