Seat launches Cupra performance brand

The sporty sub-brand of the Spanish manufacturer will launch its first vehicles at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

Seat has officially unveiled the Cupra brand, which will serve as a performance spin-off of the Spanish manufacturer.

The new marquee will be releasing its own vehicles when the brand is officially launched on February 22, 2018, and the first glimpse of these is at the Geneva Motor Show on March 6.

Having already been a part of Seat naming structure since 1996 when it appeared on a spiced-up edition of the Leon hatchback, Cupra models will from now-on not have any Seat badging or naming and will be completely separate.

Although it isn’t confirmed whether the brand will be making its own bespoke models, initial reports suggest that the first few models will be rebadged Seat cars with performance upgrades and features.

Cupra models are currently available in the Ibiza and Leon hatchback line-ups, with both providing dynamic driving alongside peppy performance. They also come with more premium features, such as top-end comfort options and the latest in autonomous safety features.

The Cupra name made its debut on both the Leon and the Ibiza in 1999, and is a portmanteau of ‘Cup Racing’ to distinguish sportier models.
