Self-driving, 745-mile range Teslas by 2020

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has announced that the electric car brand will have fully autonomous vehicles with a range of up to 745 miles by 2020.

Elon Musk is well known for making ambitious claims for the future – and an interview on Danish television last week gave him the platform to do it again.

Currently, Tesla’s most impressive offering in terms of range is the Model S, which in an endurance test was capable of travelling 452.8 miles. As with many other electric cars, the 745-mile range will most likely be an endurance range as well and will not be able to be achieved in real-world driving.

The new 745-mile range will be made possible due to new lithium-ion batteries, which will be produced in Tesla’s Gigafactories.

When it comes to self-driving cars, beta testing is already underway by Tesla and Musk believes that it could be ready in a few years. However, Musk also commented on the fact that road laws may be slightly behind and slow down the introduction of autonomous technology.

Autonomous technology is already popping up around the car market. For example, Honda and Vauxhall already have Lane Keep Assist features on its CR-V and Astra models respectively.
