Sexy Black Edition gives Honda Civic Type R a last hurrah

Since a new Honda Civic will arrive to the UK market later this year, that means the Type R based on the current hatchback will soon end production. So, to commemorate the last of the current Civic Type R, Honda has revealed a new Black Edition of the outgoing hot hatch.

This version is limited to the last 100 cars to come off the production line and Honda expects this eye-catching model to become a true collector’s item. Already been shipped to dealers across the country, the exterior and interior of the Civic Type R Black Edition features predominantly a black finish with red accents.

The bright red detailing found on the rear wing end plates help to make this car stand out more next to regular Type R models. While the design changes are no doubt distinctive, the performance of the Black Edition is unchanged from regular Type R examples.

That means it still uses a 2.0-litre VTEC turbo petrol engine, mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. It produces 306bhp plus 400Nm of torque and the 0-62mph sprint time is just 5.7 seconds.

Pricing for the Civic Type R Black Edition is based on the car’s existing GT model at £32,300.

The head of cars at Honda UK, Phil Webb, said: “There are only going to be 2,500 of the current Civic Type Rs on UK roads, so the car is going to be pretty special as it is.”

With Honda wrapping up production of the current Type R at its factory in Swindon, attention now turns to the next-generation Civic hatchback, which goes on sale in March. A Type R hot hatch version of the new Civic is in development and is expected to launch some during the second half of this year.
