Skoda has introduced a third powertrain option to its hot Octavia vRS in the form of a powerful new diesel.
Diesel power has been offered across the Octavia vRS generations, and will continue to feature in the latest car – sitting alongside a 2.0-litre petrol and a 1.4-litre petrol-electric plug-in hybrid, which both produce 242bhp.
But as for the new diesel model, this time it’s a 197bhp turbocharged 2.0-litre unit that’s under the bonnet, bringing a 16bhp increase over its predecessor. It comes with a seven-speed DSG automatic transmission as standard, while there’s the option of four-wheel-drive, too – it’s the only Octavia vRS model offered with this, in fact.
Tweaks to the powertrain include a new clutch, which is lighter than before and more efficient, while a new piston pump features too.
In terms of performance it can sprint to 60mph in just 7.2 seconds (6.6 seconds for those with four-wheel-drive) and reach a top speed of 154mph. As for efficiency, Skoda claims it can return up to an impressive 56.5mpg, with CO2 emissions of just 130g/km. Four-wheel-drive models will be marginally thirstier.
Standard equipment on the new vRS model is generous and includes heated sports seats, a digital cockpit and full LED Matrix LED headlights to name but a few feature
The Octavia vRS continues to be available as both a hatchback and an estate, with diesel prices starting from £32,250 for the former and £33,530 for the latter – making it around £1,500 more expensive than the petrol, but £2,500 cheaper than the hybrid.
