Skoda Vision X Concept previews a new hybrid SUV

Latest concept to come from Skoda shows the basis for the next model in its SUV line-up, featuring a CNG and petrol hybrid powertrain.

Skoda’s next SUV looks set to be a cutting-edge hybrid machine, if its latest concept is anything to go by.

This is the Vision X, which is a look at the Czech manufacturer’s next potential car. It features a unique hybrid powertrain that uses a natural gas and petrol-powered unit, paired to an electric motor.

Skoda says this setup would result in much more efficient vehicles as CNG-powered cars already emit around 18 to 25 per cent less carbon dioxide than all-petrol counterparts. The engine would also be able to run on petrol if the CNG ran out, serving to extend the overall range of the car. The electric motor would come in at lower speeds to help with pulling away thanks to instant torque as well as providing continuous all-wheel drive.

Innovation also extends to the interior, as it includes a centre console that can display the energy flow of each motor as well as the mode of operation. The cabin also has a “sports-oriented” theme, resulting in the addition of breathable fabrics, artificial leather and rubber surfaces.

There’s even mounting systems in the back for two electric skateboards in the boot as part of Skoda’s “Simply Clever” ethos, to encourage drivers to cover the last portion of a journey using another eco-friendly method of transport.

Skoda hasn’t confirmed if and when the Vision X will enter production, but if it does, it’d sit alongside the Karoq and Kodiaq in its line-up of SUVs.
