Skoda's upcoming models: Here's what to look out for

With seven new Skoda models expected in the run up to 2020, including a new baby SUV, here's what you need to look out for from the Czech brand.

As one of the most affordable Volkswagen Group brands, Skoda has become a reputable and reliable manufacturer with an exciting strategy in the next few years.

After the launch of the Kodiaq SUV back in 2016, the off-road-inspired line-up from the Czech brand has seen the addition of the Karoq, but will another model be joining them in the near-future?

But what can we expect from the rest of the Skoda range in the coming years? We take a look at what it will have to offer…

A new compact SUV to join the Karoq and Kodiaq

As with other VW Group brands, Seat and VW, Skoda will be bringing a small crossover to the market – mirroring the Seat Arona and VW T-Roc. Following on from the popularity of the Kodiaq and Karoq, Skoda will introduce a spiritual replacement for the Yeti in the next couple of years. This addition will also bring Skoda in-line with Seat and VW by offering three SUVs – one in each crossover/SUV segment.

An all-electric SUV is on its way

Joining VW and Audi, Skoda will introduce a battery electric vehicle, with an SUV-style model likely. Following in the footsteps of the Audi e-tron SUV, Skoda’s Vision E is likely to have a range of around 300 miles. With a coupe-like style, a concept version was shown at the 2017 Shanghai Motor Show, but expect a production version around 2020 – when Volkswagen will release the first of its I.D. range.

Fabia and Superb models getting a freshen-up

Both of these models will receive a mid-generation update to move more in line with the current Skoda design ethos. The Fabia family will mainly have a cosmetic refresh for both the hatchback and estate models, while the Superb range is likely to gain a plug-in hybrid alternative to bring it in line with market rivals – along with a refreshed design and new engines.

New Rapid will mark start of new era for Skoda

As one of the brand’s best-selling models, the Rapid hasn’t really broken ground in the UK. But the upcoming 2019 model is likely to change that with new styling, a more premium feel and an updated interior design that will set the tone for future Skoda models. Think of it as taking inspiration from the current Audi A3 – with which it will almost certainly share a platform.

Kodiaq to get a vRS version

The brand’s largest SUV will be getting the vRS treatment towards the end of 2018, and like other vRS models will include a new bodykit, more powerful engines and a more menacing overall look. As one of Skoda’s more popular models, combining that with a more dynamic setup is likely to improve sales even further.

A new Octavia, but not for a little while

After receiving a mid-life update in 2017, a new Octavia is a couple of years off – but when it breaks cover it will be a forward-looking model that will set the tone for future Skodas. The Czech brand will throw everything it has at this one, including autonomous technology, electrified powertrains and an all-new look. But with SUVs dominating the market at the moment, it is difficult to say how much of an impact it will have on Skoda’s future plans.
