SsangYong’s first EV is on the way…

The affordable manufacturer will be launching its first EV in 2021.

SsangYong has confirmed powertrain details of an upcoming electric model that will be based on the new Korando crossover.

The brand’s first production EV is set to debut in 2021, and is provisionally called the Korando E100, according to a report from Auto Express, which also outlined detailed powertrain figures.

The new EV is set to feature a 188bhp electric motor, making this electric version the most powerful variant of the Korando. The model is also offered with a 1.5-litre petrol unit and a 1.6-litre diesel engine.

Auto Express has been told by SsangYong that its powertrain will offer “best in class” performance figures.

As for the important battery, the Korando will feature a 61.5kWh lithium-ion block, which should allow for a claimed 261 miles, though this is less than the class-leading Kia e-Niro.

The brand also told the motoring publication that a mild-hybrid powertrain would be introduced to the Korando in 2022, which could also be rolled out onto further models into the firm’s range.

The new EV was heavily previewed in March 2018 with the all-electric ‘e-SIV’ concept, which shares a similar design to the all-new Korando, too.
