Inside, the 508 comes with wrap-around front seats with a massage function, premium upholstery and trim options, and a panoramic opening glass roof, as well as the Magic Flat folding seats to extend the 530-litre boot up to 1,780 litres. A hands-free powered tailgate is also fitted.

Peugeot has also fitted the i-Cockpit display setup to the 508, which includes all the information you’ll need to see on a series of screens and a 10-speaker sound system.

In terms of safety, Peugeot has fitted adaptive cruise control with stop & go, lane keeping assist and a night vision system that uses an infrared camera to detect objects and living beings in low visibility.

The 508 SW is available with five engines from launch – three diesels and two petrol – with Peugeot confirming that a plug-in hybrid version will be available in the second-half of 2019.

Gilles Vidal, Peugeot design director, said: “The all-new Peugeot 508 SW includes all its quality features but sets itself apart by its sporty stance and design cues that are completely new for a mainstream car producer. It is a wonderful object of desire that makes a clear statement regarding its ambitions."

Pierre-Paul Mattei, Peugeot 508 product design director, added: “We wanted to design a unique SW with a very strong personality that was perfectly situated at the heart of its segment. The secret of the rear structure performance in terms of compactness and rigidity is the sensible and practical boot with an extremely sleek design. Similarly, the frameless doors provide the perfect response to accessibility in a vehicle with a very low roof line.”

The Peugeot 508 SW will get its public debut at the 2018 Paris Motor Show, with the model available from January 2019.
