Subaru concept previews new Impreza

Subaru has revealed a new concept car at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show which previews the next-generation Impreza hatchback.

The design of the concept indicates that the new Impreza will have a much more radical design than the current model, featuring a lot of sharp lines and creases in the body shell.

Having a more stand-out appearance should give the Impreza a better chance to compete against its hatchback rivals, which include the new Vauxhall Astra and the Ford Focus.

Highlights of the Impreza concept’s styling include the protruding wheel arches, coupe-esque roof line, rear lip spoiler and the hexagonal front grille. The latter is a trademark of modern Subaru cars.

The general design of the front of this concept is reminiscent of the recently-launched Subaru Levorg, although the swept-back headlamps are a notable exception.

Not much else is known about the Impreza concept, but the production version is expected to receive a new generation of Subaru engines with fuel-saving cylinder deactivation technology.

Front-wheel drive is likely to be standard for the next-generation Impreza, but a four-wheel drive powertrain could be included as an option.

The new Subaru Impreza will reportedly go into production sometime during 2016. The concept for the next Impreza is part of Subaru’s five-year plan called ‘Prominence 2020’, which will eventually see the manufacturer’s entire product range receive an overhaul.
