Subaru confirms that new BRZ STi will be unveiled on June 8th

Subaru has apparently confirmed that an STi version of the BRZ sports car is in the works, and that the car will be unveiled to the public on June 8th.

Last week, images captured by spy photographers showed a BRZ test mule sporting a large rear wing and what looked to be hidden STi badges, sparking rumours that a heated-up version was on the way.

A tweet sent last night by Subaru USA, which shows the rear end of a BRZ wearing a big carbon fibre spoiler, seems to put paid to those rumours.

Enthusiasts have been hoping for a hotter version of the BRZ, tweaked by Subaru’s famous STi division and with more power, essentially since the car was first introduced.

In the past, Subaru has toyed with STi-tweaked versions of the car like the BRZ tS by STi, which was made for the Japanese domestic market but which offered only handling tweaks and no extra power.

It’s unclear whether this big-winged version will be something similar, though from the test mule’s appearance there are no obvious upgrades that would hint at extra power, like a bonnet scoop to feed a turbo intercooler.

What is apparent from the spy photographers’ shots is that the car will feature a more aggressive front end to match the rear wing, plus larger Brembo brakes and uprated wheels and tyres.

It’s likely that the car won’t deviate too far from the BRZ STi Sport Concept unveiled at this year’s Tokyo Auto Salon and pictured above, though we’ll have to wait until early June to find out more.
