Subaru unveils new special edition WRX, with a CVT gearbox…

Subaru has unveiled a new special edition version of the WRX inspired by the famous Nurburgring race track, but somewhat bizarrely it comes exclusively with a CVT gearbox.

Called the WRX S4 tS NBR Challenge, it takes the standard WRX and adds 19-inch BBS alloy wheels, a suede wrapped steering wheel and a massive carbon fibre rear wing for proper racetrack kudos.

296bhp, STi-tuned suspension

Under the surface, the car gets the same 296bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged boxer engine as the WRX, and adds aggressive STi-tuned suspension along with Subaru’s Lineartronic CVT gearbox.

It might seem like an odd choice for a performance car, but for better or worse the S4 will only be available in its home market, where Japanese buyers seemingly can’t get enough of the CVT.

Japanese market exclusive

Other bits of note include a front strut-tower brace and adjustable dampers for the front suspension, along with four-piston Brembo brakes and torque vectoring.

Prices for the WRX S4 tS NBR Challenge start from approximately £40,000, but here in the UK the regular WRX STi is available from £28,995.
