Supercars of London 2016

Supercars gravitate towards London. Fact. It doesn’t matter what time of year it is, you have a pretty good chance of spotting a seriously fast sports car cruising around the city streets of England’s capital. There is, however, one time of year that tends to attract more supercars than usual.

London supercar season usually sets in around July and lasts about a month, although this year it seems to have kicked into gear earlier than usual, flooding the city with every sports car imaginable, from a gold Lamborghini Aventador to a unique Bugatti Veyron.

For many, London’s supercar season is the Holy Grail for motoring enthusiasts. Sure, there’s the London Motor Show, but as a corporate manufacturer-based event, its thrills are limited somewhat to production or concept models. That’s where supercars of London comes into its own.

A name that is probably familiar to supercar fans is Turki Bin Abdullah. Why is that – well, he is the Saudi Prince who has been spotted in London with his own gold-plated super fleet. Having shipped them from his home in Saudi Arabia, Prince Abdulla’s gold supercars sparked petrolhead hysteria on social media, with people overflowing their news feeds once spotting them in Knightsbridge, London.

Included in this royal fleet was a Lamborghini Aventador SV, Rolls Royce Phantom Coupe, Bentley Flying Spur and a six-wheeled Mercedes G63. All of the above were dipped in gold, a wrap that reportedly cost around £4,000 per car. The total cost of this lavish quartet? Well over £1,000,000. And how rich is Prince Abdullah? Well, he has a pet cheetah.

Apparently, his golden rides were seen accumulating hundreds of pounds worth of parking tickets around London. In the grand scheme of things however, a few hundred pounds is nothing to a member of Saudi royalty. With that in mind, it wouldn’t surprise us if they were to flout more rules and be willing to happily pay the respective fines, just to attract attention.

Revving your engine, sprinting from a standing start and driving erratically are all actions that carry heavy penalties in certain areas of London (up to £1,000 a pop), rules no doubt put in place in an attempt to deter throttle-happy rich folk.

Although making an appearance early on in 2016, these precious metal-plated supercars will no doubt pop up again and again at other events.

Aside to the Saudi Prince’s gold armada, 2016 has also seen London streets echoing with the exhaust sounds of the Lamborghini Huracan, McLaren P1, Porsche 918 Spyder and the Ferrari 488 GTB – with numerous images of the cars shared on social media.
