Surge in use of dashcams in cars

The use of dashboard cameras in cars here in Britain has doubled in popularity in the last year, according to a recent survey.

According to the results of a survey conducted by the RAC, nearly one in eight men (13 per cent) own a dashcam for their cars, while four per cent of women have bought one too. Drivers aged over 50 are the most likely to own a dashcam, with 22 per cent of survey respondents in this age category saying they have one.

When taking the survey’s findings into account, it’s now estimated that 2.9 million British drivers have a dashcam fitted to a car. It’s also believed that more than half of all drivers in Britain are now considering buying a dashcam to fit to their car.

Nearly a quarter of the survey respondents said they believed that having a camera onboard their car would improve their driving, whether they appreciate the surveillance or not.

One in five of those quizzed also revealed they had been in a motoring accident that included a dispute over who was to blame. Out of those particular people, 69 per cent believed a dashcam would have helped them solve their case.

The Head of Retail at RAC, Lynn Hayzelden, commented: “Not only do dash cams encourage safer driving and provide excellent protection against insurance fraud, they can also now save you money on your car insurance.”
