Survey finds many drivers ignorant of motoring laws

A recent survey has found a worrying percentage of drivers are ignorant of motoring laws, especially those related to driving on the motorway.

Recent research has found that a lack of awareness of UK driving laws is putting many motorists at risk.

Warranty Direct surveyed 1,000 drivers and troublingly a quarter of them thought that it was legal to undertake on the motorway. Also, nearly a third believed it was acceptable to pull over to the hard shoulder to sleep if they could not find a rest stop.

32 per cent of respondents also thought the national speed limit on a single carriageway was 70mph instead of 60mph.

Only 31 per cent of the respondents knew that accelerating through a puddle could bring them three penalty points on their licence. 38 per cent of respondents were found to be unaware that using a car’s horn while stationary was against the law.

The chief operating officer at Warranty Direct, Philip Ward, said: “Our latest survey reveals there is a strong need for UK drivers to brush up on their knowledge of driving laws.

“The results suggest many mistakes could be down to not knowing the appropriate laws, which can easily be rectified. We recommend any unsure drivers to re-read a copy of the Highway Code to avoid causing any dangerous situations when out on the road.”
