Suzuki GB looking to sell 1,500 Swift Sports per year

The Japanese brand is aiming to match the sales performance for the previous generation of the sporty supermini, with current owners the target market.

With the launch of the latest version of the Swift Sport, Suzuki GB is aiming to sell 1,500 units every year to match the success of the predecessor.

The sporty supermini now costs £17,999 – which is up from the approximate £15,000 the previous model cost when it went out of production last year – and the brand is hoping to entice previous and current Sport owners to the latest edition.

First produced back in 2005, the Sport is now in its third generation and includes racier looks that complement the increase in power to 138bhp from its 1.4-litre turbocharged engine.

Product manager for Suzuki GB, Ed Norman, said: “We’ve sold around 11,500 Swift Sports since its introduction. The peak for any one year has been around 1,500 to 1,700.

“Our aspiration in terms of volume for the Swift Sport is similar to what we’ve done historically, and that’s to sell around 1,500 per year. Based on what we now know about the car, we think it could be more but for now, this is a realistic target.

“A key audience for us when we launch the car is existing owners. That adds up to about 11,000 people currently which is a big target. We haven’t offered a Swift Sport for about a year, so those customers have had nothing new to buy for a while and I think a lot of those will come back when we launch the new car.”

The new version of the Swift Sport goes on sale from June 1, with deliveries beginning shortly after.
