Suzuki Ignis and facelifted SX4 S-Cross detailed ahead of Paris debut

Suzuki will introduce an all-new, SUV-styled city car called the Ignis and a facelifted version of the SX4 S-Cross crossover at this year’s Paris Motor Show this October.

All-new Ignis includes hybrid option

The Ignis name has some history in the UK market, as Suzuki used it to for an SUV model here between 2000 and 2008. The name is now being resurrected for a brand-new city car with some SUV styling elements. Rivals could include the Fiat Panda Trekking and Dacia Sandero Stepway.

While the Ignis was shown at last year’s Tokyo Motor Show, the European version launching in 2017 will reportedly be 10-15cm longer and have redesigned bumpers. Other design features include roof rails and the Ignis will offer both two and four-wheel drive powertrains.

In a way then, the Ignis is similar to Suzuki’s Swift 4x4 supermini, but the Ignis will be noticeably smaller and very lightweight. The new Suzuki Ignis will also offer a range of personalisation options such as different roof colours - an increasingly more popular feature of modern city cars.

Expect engines to include the same 88bhp 1.2-litre Dualjet petrol engine available with the latest Suzuki Baleno. An optional hybrid powertrain will also be made available for the new Ignis during next year.

Suzuki SX4 S-Cross facelift

The new Ignis will go on display at this October’s Paris Motor Show alongside the facelifted SX4 S-Cross. The refreshed crossover gets a new exterior design, complete with a bolder-looking grille, plus improved interior quality. All of this is intended to give the car what Suzuki calls the “sophisticated character of an SUV”.

Suzuki is also adding new 1.0-litre and 1.4-litre Boosterjet turbocharged engines for the S-Cross which replace the existing 1.6-litre petrol unit. The 1.6-litre DDiS diesel remains available. The facelifted SX4 S-Cross will launch to the UK market during mid-October.
