Suzuki removes diesel from UK range

The Japanese brand says that the decreased interest in diesel means that it will focus on petrol vehicles for the foreseeable future.

Suzuki has become the latest brand to drop diesel-powered cars from its line-up, as the interest in vehicles powered by the fuel continues to fall.

Up to this point, the manufacturer only uses one diesel engine that powers the Vitara and SX4 S-Cross models – but sales of vehicles that use that engine only equate to three per cent of Suzuki’s output.

Sourced by Fiat, the 1.6-litre unit will now only be sold in existing vehicles. The brand will review whether to re-introduce diesel engines at a later date.

A statement from Suzuki stated: “Due to very low demand for diesel engine models in the UK Suzuki range (less than three per cent of total UK range sales), the DDiS derivatives of Vitara and S-Cross for UK only have temporarily ceased production.

“This is due to much higher demand for the Boosterjet petrol models and the real-world fuel consumption that they attain. Diesel engine models will be available from existing stock only. However, these models will remain on sale in the Republic of Ireland where demand is much stronger. Suzuki GB will review the situation again in the future.”

Earlier this year, Porsche said that it will be dropping diesel-powered vehicles with immediate effect, while Fiat Chrysler is believed to be removing such engines by 2022.
