Tesla CEO Elon Musk is working on something called “Project Goldfinger”

Tesla CEO, billionaire genius and potential real-life Bond villain Elon Musk is reportedly working on something called Project Goldfinger.

Earlier this week, car site Jalopnik was invited on a tour of Tesla’s new Gigafactory site in Nevada, the world’s largest building by footprint and where Tesla will build the batteries for its cars.

Inside the factory, journalists were told they weren’t allowed to take photos of certain parts of the factory, including one area marked with a sign that read “Top Secret: Project Goldfinger”.

Reportedly, the sign was fixed to a sealed-off area near a stamping section, with none of the Tesla employees or spokespeople able to comment on exactly what Project Goldfinger is.

Working titles inspired by Bond films

During a press conference, Musk himself was pressed to explain what the project could be, but he laughed it off and dismissed it as “probably a joke”.

However, in the past Tesla has used working titles inspired by Bond films to disguise major product updates, with the new front fascia for the Model S saloon internally called Project SPECTRE.

Musk is known for his love of the Bond films, with a Model S easter egg turning the car’s internal image into a sprite of the Lotus Esprit submarine, a car which Musk actually bought.

As a result, it’s possible that Project Goldfinger could be a new product or new update for one of Tesla’s new models. It could also be a prototype death ray, or then again it could be just a joke. Time will tell.
