Tesla Model S gets range update, plus ‘Ludicrous Mode’

Tesla has announced an assortment of updates for its Model S range, which include the addition of new specifications, plus a new ‘Ludicrous Mode’.

A redesigned fuse on the car’s battery means that the Model S can now hit 62mph from a standstill in just 2.8 seconds, a time more closely associated with hypercars like the McLaren P1.

Unlike standard fuses, which melt when a certain current is exceeded, the new fuse constantly monitors amperage, cutting power when and where it’s deemed necessary.

This allows it to cope with power levels of up to 1,500 amps, pumping more power into the motor and resulting in the Model S able to generate G-force of up to 1.1Gs during acceleration.

Ludicrous Mode will be available on the newly-announced P90D model, which benefits from an upgraded battery pack that also increases range by 15 miles to a grand total of 300 miles.

Owners of the existing P85D, however, can have their cars upgraded with the new battery pack, redesigned electronics and Ludicrous Mode for an additional charge of around £3,200.

As well as the range-topping upgrades, Tesla announced that a new entry-level rear-wheel drive Model S, powered by a 70kWh motor, is due to debut in the next few months.

Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk also stated that the launch of the upcoming Model X SUV, plus the lower-model Model 3, are due in the near future, along with a new version of the Tesla Roadster.

Speaking at the updates’ unveiling on Friday, Mr Musk said: “With the announcement today, we are improving both the low end and the high end. We will continue to make improvements."
