Tesla rival Faraday Future unveils supercar concept at CES

Californian company Faraday Future has unveiled a new prototype electric supercar designed to rival companies like Tesla at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Named the FF01, the new battery-powered concept is the first official offering from the previously mysterious manufacturer, which some believed was a front for Apple’s rumoured electric car.

Generating upwards of 1,000 horsepower courtesy of its electric motors, the FF01 is reportedly able to accelerate from 0-60mph in under three seconds, with a claimed top speed of 200mph.

According to the company, the radical prototype also features a multi-touchscreen interface with augmented reality projections, plus a helmet that can deliver oxygen and water to the driver.

Backed by Chinese internet TV provider LeTV, Faraday Future believes that it’s on course to bring the FF01 to market within the next two years, thanks to its “variable production architecture”.

The company’s research chief Nick Sampson, who was previously an engineer at Tesla, explained that the basic underlying structure of the FF01 can be adapted to create various other vehicles.

Able to accommodate between one and four motors, variously sized battery packs, different wheelbase sizes and more, the architecture can be used for everything from supercars to pick-ups.

This, Mr Sampson said, means that different models can be rolled out in a relatively short space of time, with some prioritising range and usability while others focus on performance and power.

In time Faraday Future says it aims to build self-driving autonomous cars and also to provide “connected mobility” to the wider population, likening its vehicles to “tablets on wheels”.

Although Tesla isn’t attending this year’s CES show, several other manufacturers are expected to show off new electric concepts of their own, including BMW, Volkswagen and General Motors.
