Tesla unveils otherworldly CyberTruck

The utility truck, which has a claimed range upwards of 500 miles in range-topping guise and can tow over six tonnes, is set to arrive in 2021.

Tesla has unveiled an all-electric utility vehicle that could offer over 500 miles of range and near-bulletproof bodywork.

Called the CyberTruck, it looks like something out of a PlayStation game from the early 2000s, and it’s set to be released at the end of 2021.

The angular pick-up truck can have up to three electric motors to emulate ‘the performance of a sports car’, as it has a claimed 0-60mph time of just 2.9 seconds.

In the top Tri-Motor spec, it’s said that the CyberTruck can tow upwards of six tonnes. The model will also come with single and dual-motor setups at launch. A triple-motor variant is due to arrive at a later date, too.

Built from stainless steel and shatterproof glass, the CyberTruck uses some hardy materials. But when it was first unveiled by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, it was put through its paces by Franz von Holzhausen – Tesla’s head of design – and it didn’t pass with flying colours.

When metal balls were thrown at the windows in an odd demonstration, the shatterproof glass shattered – leaving Musk red-faced up on stage.

This futuristic and supposedly robust pick-up does come with seating for up to six people, a 17-inch infotainment display and the capacity to fit a Tesla-built quadbike in the back – which can be charged from the truck’s battery.

Prices for the model will start from around £31,000 for the single motor version, with customers able to put down a £100 deposit for a pre-order slot now. First models will arrive towards the end of 2021, while the top-end Tri-Motor version is expected at the end of 2022.
