The 2017 Ford GT officially makes 647 horsepower, tops out at 216mph

After months of estimates and guesswork, Ford has officially confirmed the power output of the all-new Ford GT supercar.

The new GT will produce 647 horsepower and 746Nm of torque from its 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 engine, making it the most powerful EcoBoost-powered Ford car ever made.

Exact performance figures have yet to be released, but Ford says that the car will tear all the way on to 216mph, and claims it can beat cars like the McLaren 675LT or Ferrari 458 Speciale round a track.

Dave Pericak, Ford Performance’s global director, said: “Our expectation has always been that the EcoBoost V6 would perform exceptionally well in the Ford GT - both in terms of power as well as aerodynamic efficiency.

“We tested and developed this powertrain through the Daytona Prototype race car that ran in IMSA for two seasons, last season racing with Ford GT. We are extremely pleased with how it performs, both on the track and on the road.”

The GT also comes with launch control for perfect starts off the line, along with an anti-lag system to maintain turbo pressure when the throttle is lifted, though the exact mechanics of this system have yet to be unveiled.

As well as that, it features a carbon fibre-intensive construction to make it as light as possible, along with an active aero system designed to provide optimum downforce and balance at any speed.

Raj Nair, Ford’s executive vice president of global product development and chief technical officer, said: “The Ford GT is all about performance.

“We achieved considerable weight savings with the carbon fiber architecture. We then reinvested some of that savings into where it counts most – performance, specifically, the active dynamics. The result is an even faster car.”
