The Ford Focus RS could be about to get even hotter

Ford’s performance chiefs could be close to signing off a limited-edition version of the new Ford Focus RS that’s even more powerful than the 345bhp original.

A report from Autocar claims that an even quicker version of the upcoming five-door hyperhatch is being considered, and rumours state it could be the fastest-accelerating hatchback ever.

The report states that upgrades to the RS’s four-wheel drive powertrain and weight-saving techniques could see it get even more capable than the production model due to arrive next year.

However, the car’s 2.3-litre EcoBoost, uprated from the Ford Mustang, is already operating close to the limit, and any attempts to make more power could be scuppered by the risk of overheating.

Budget constraints reportedly limited Ford’s ability to offer the standard RS with weight-saving options, though a limited version could give more potential for improving the power-to-weight ratio.

Carbon fibre components, lighter suspension and carbon brakes could all take upwards of 100kg out of the car, while a stripped-out interior could potentially make it even lighter.

Any limited-edition Focus RS would also likely get a limited-slip differential for the front axle, while a dual-clutch automatic gearbox instead of the standard manual could be up for consideration.

With a more powerful engine and lighter bodywork, it’s possible that the RS, which can already crack the 0-62mph sprint time in 4.7 seconds could get there even quicker.

Rivals like the Mercedes-AMG A45 and Audi RS3 can blast their way to 62mph from a standstill in 4.3 seconds or less, and are likely to be the benchmark any hotter RS would be aiming for.

The report states, however, that Ford says that even the standard Focus RS could be much closer to the Germans than initially thought, however, particularly with the optional Michelin semi-slick tyres.

It’s unknown when Ford could announce any special-edition RS, but there could be a while to wait given that the regular Ford Focus RS isn’t due to debut in the UK until early next year.
