The M25 named Britain’s slowest motorway

The M25 has been identified as Britain's slowest motorway in the results of a recent survey.

The M25 has been given the undesirable title of UK’s slowest motorway in a recent survey.

The vehicle tracking company Satrak studied the average speed of cars on different motorways across Britain and found traffic tends to move the slowest on the M25. Findings are based on the analysis of data from 527,000 vehicles over the period of a year.

It was found that the average speed of cars on the M25 is just 25.05mph, this is nearly 5mph slower than the second slowest motorway on the list, which is the M4 (where vehicles average 30.46mph).

Also found to be among the UK’s slowest motorways is the M606, where drivers average 40.68mph, the M621 with an average speed of 42.32mph and the M73 where cars average 43.71mph.

The M25 is a 117-mile motorway that encircles almost the entirety of Greater London. At the average speed of 25.05mph, it would take a vehicle nearly five hours to circumnavigate the capital over the M25’s entire route.

The Managing Director of Satrak, Dan Walton, said: “It’s little surprise to find that the M25 is in fact the slowest motorway. We undertake work throughout the country and usually find the M25 to be the most cumbersome, and our data provides evidence for that.

“I’ve heard of tailbacks stretching 12 miles in my time there so it’s of little surprise to me.”
