In recent years, Mercedes-AMG has made its name by building bespoke two-seat sports cars that have ridiculous performance and superb driving dynamics.
But its latest offering allows you to bring more people along for the ride, as the Affalterbach-based brand has introduced the new GT 4-door.
Having tuned various Mercedes-Benz family vehicles to have outstanding performance, this is AMG’s first purpose-built family saloon and it includes all the features found on the manufacturer’s lead sports car – the AMG GT.
With similar looks to the two-seat version, it has a longer roof line to accommodate the rear seats, but slopes down gracefully and includes a deployable spoiler that helps improve handling at higher speeds. The 4-door also comes with AMG’s latest grille design and slim LED headlights.
Under the long bonnet, customers can choose from three turbocharged power options – an electrified 3.0-litre six-cylinder unit with 429bhp and a twin-turbocharged V8 engine coming in two states of tune, 576bhp and 630bhp for the top-spec 63 S model.
All engines are paired to a nine-speed automatic sports transmission and AMG’s specially-engineered 4Matic+ all-wheel drive system.
Each 4-door model can get from 0-60mph in under 4.5 seconds and go onto a top speed in excess of 177mph. The top-spec 63 S can do the sprint to 60mph in three seconds flat and get up to 195mph – staggering for a car that can carry a whole family.
The interior includes a driver-focused setup with the dual-12.3-inch Widescreen Cockpit display, a performance steering wheel with touch-sensitive buttons, leather upholstery and air conditioning, alongside a range of premium features.
Space-wise, this super saloon comes with 365 litres of boot space with 60 litres extra storage underneath in either a four- or five-seat configuration. Folding down the rear bench adds another 1,000 litres of space – making a 1,324-litre area to load.
Following its unveiling at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, the AMG GT 4-door will go on sale this summer with prices expected to start around the £80,000-mark.
