The voice-activated assistance system will be introduced to vehicles next year and will adapt to the driver’s personality.

To keep drivers and passengers informed on their journeys, BMW is to introduce an artificial intelligence, voice-activated assistant to its vehicles in 2019.

Called Intelligent Personal Assistant, the system is used alongside the latest BMW operating software on the iDrive infotainment system and provides occupants with up-to-date information.

With the prompt “Hey BMW”, the system will learn the driver’s habits and personality so it can be as easier to use as time goes on, and will also follow simple instructions such as “Take me home” to set directions and “I’m cold” to change the climate control.

Drivers can also personalise their assistant by giving it a name, and even ask it more profound questions so it can provide casual conversation.

Dieter May, BMW Group senior vice president for digital products, said: “BMW’s Intelligent Personal Assistant teams up with the new BMW Operating System 7.0 to create a brand new, digital form of interaction with the customer’s BMW that redefines the whole driving experience.”

If the driver starts to feel tired and tells the system, it can adapt the car’s environment with different mood lighting, music and temperature to make them feel more awake. BMW also said that in the future, the system will be able to coach drivers to save fuel and alert them to book servicing appointments any issues with the car.

The system will be coming to the UK in May 2019, and will only be fitted to cars with the BMW Operating System 7.0, including the upcoming 3 Series, X5, Z4 and 8 Series.
