Top 5 cars on display at the 2018 LA Auto Show

Another year of the LA Auto Show is upon us – here are some of the highlights

Running from November 30 to December 9, the 2018LA Auto Show gives people a glimpse at some amazing upcoming cars from various manufactures.

Can’t make it to the show? No need to worry. We’ve compiled a list of the best five cars on display at the annual motor show.

Porsche 911 (992)

2019 Porsche 911 Carrera 4s

The eighth generation of the iconic 911 has made its first appearance at the show – giving attendees a chance to see the new look model. Speaking of design, exterior styling stays true to the original 1963 model like the previous generations, but the most noticeable changes are at the rear, which now has a more modern and muscular look.

Displayed in the Carrera 4S guise, power has been increased over the previous version, while a new eight-speed dual-clutch PDK automatic transmission has been introduced. Performance wise, the 4S will do 0-60mph in 3.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 191mph.

The new Mazda3 is striking to say the least. Flowing lines and a sloping roofline give the hatchback a distinctive look. However, don’t go thinking it’s all form and no function - this hatch has some clever features on offer. For instance, Mazda introduces the all-new SkyActiv-X engine with this car - and it’s said to be a game changer for internal combustion engines. It’s very complex, but in simple terms the engine runs on petrol and works like a diesel, therefore delivering petrol performance and diesel economy. It’s an intriguing prospect and could shake up the car industry as we know it.

Making its public debut at the show is the new BMW 8-Series Convertible. This drop-top grand tourer joins the 8-Series Coupe in the flagship BMW range. The convertible shares engines with its hard-top sibling – so the monstrous 4.4 litre petrol V8 is carried over, as well as the 840d turbocharged six-cylinder diesel. Equipped with the petrol powertrain, the M850i in convertible form can get from 0-60mph in just 3.9 seconds (0.2 seconds slower than the Coupe).

If you thought the GT R was as track focused as the AMG GT was going to get, think again. The Mercedes-AMG GT R Pro is the firm’s answer to the Porsche 911 GT3 RS and Ferrari 488 Pista – both of which are faster versions of already ballistic cars. It’s lighter, more aerodynamic and more suited to the racetrack than the standard GT.

Iron Man himself – Robert Downey Jr – helped pull the covers off Audi’s new e-tron concept – the GT. It’s a 582bhp four-door, all-electric, all-wheel drive rocket ship for the road - and quite a handsome one, too. The e-tron GT concept is claimed to reach 60mph from a standstill in just 3.5 seconds, and go on to a limited 149mph top speed. Developed alongside the Porsche Taycan, the e-tron GT is set to arrive in production form at the end of 2020 – going on sale in 2021.
