Toyota has made a cute little robot to keep drivers company

Toyota has unveiled the Kirobo Mini, a little robot companion designed to talk to drivers and keep them company during their journeys.

Toyota has revealed a small robot which is designed to provide companionship to drivers by holding conversations while they are behind the wheel. The robot, called Kirobo Mini, is due to go on sale in Japan next year.

The Kirobo Mini is just four inches (10cm) tall and can fit into the cup holder of most vehicles. However, although it was designed with drivers in mind, this robot can easily accompany owners outside of vehicles too.

Its appearance and mannerisms are deliberately designed to give the robot childlike attributes. It can also tailor conversations to include comments about a driver’s journey, based on data gained from the owner’s vehicle.

Toyota says the Kirobo Mini can engage in “casual conversation”, using gestures, facial expressions and blinking. It can remember user preferences, previous events and any likes, dislikes and outings previously expressed by the driver. The Kirobo Mini is even able to recognise and react to certain emotions people are expressing by viewing their facial expressions.

The robot has a provisional price tag of 39,800 yen, which works out to about £300. There have not been any plans announced by Toyota to sell its Kirobo Mini outside Japan. However, it remains an intriguing insight into how one of the biggest car companies envision the future of motoring with robots involved.

It’s also the kind of gadget which could garner attention from people worldwide who are curious to try it, even if they don’t personally own a vehicle.
