Toyota premieres new GR Supra sportscar

Developed alongside Gazoo Racing and BMW, this Supra signals the return of the famous marque.

After many teasers and prototype displays, Toyota has finally revealed the new Supra for 2019.

This new version of the famous model was developed alongside Toyota’s Gazoo Racing team and BMW, who released the Supra’s chassis mate, the Z4, last year.

This fifth generation of the Supra – which was last on sale in 2002 – is the first car to be produced by Toyota Gazoo Racing and each unit will be built in the Austrian city of Graz.

Toyota maintains the Supra’s front-engined/rear-wheel drive layout, with 3.0-litre, turbocharged straight-six engine sitting under the long bonnet – with the unit developing 335bhp and 500Nm of torque.

With the power unit paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission – which goes against the manual gearbox traditionally found in the older iterations – the Supra can get from 0-60mph in 4.1 seconds and reach an electronically-limited top speed of 155mph.

Developed at the world-famous Nürburgring, the Japanese brand claims this new version of the Supra has a 1.55 ‘golden ratio’ setup – which takes into account its wheelbase and track width, providing the best balance of agility and stability.

To help with cornering, Toyota has fitted an active differential that comes with its own control unit to take into account the steering, throttle and brake to adjust the lock.

As well as being developed alongside the Z4, the Supra comes with BMW’s own iDrive infotainment setup that includes an 8.8-inch touchscreen that can also be controlled by the mid-mounted control dial.

Other features include air conditioning, an 8.8-inch instrument display, leather sports steering wheel, a head-up display and racing-inspired seats upholstered in leather and Alcantara.

The A90 Edition limited-run model will also be available from launch, which comes with an exclusive matte grey finish, black alloy wheels and a red leather interior. Only 24 of these will be sent to the UK.

Available to order now, deliveries of the Supra will begin in the summer.
