Toyota to produce 5.5 million electrified vehicles per year by 2030

The Japanese brand is looking to massively increase production of hybrid, hydrogen-fuelled and all-electric vehicles in the next 12 years

Toyota says that it will be producing 5.5 million electrified vehicles per year by the end of the next decade, with those including hybrids, all-electric and hydrogen fuel cell models.

It is the first of the three major car manufacturers to provide a figure for the number of electrified vehicles it will be producing by 2030.

Although it didn’t comment on how large the proportion that would be in terms of its overall production, it can be estimated that it will be more than half of the company’s total production – as it currently makes 10 million cars per year.

This would come at a time when petrol and diesel engine units would begin to be phased out throughout the industry, with one million of that 5.5 million emitting no harmful emissions through either all-electric or hydrogen-fuelled models.

Since it started making the Prius in 1997, Toyota has been leading the way with hybrid vehicles – as most of its range now includes an electrified option, as well as Lexus offering a petrol-hybrid with every model.

Models like the Mirai are likely to become more prevalent in motoring, as they use compressed hydrogen to power the electric system – meaning zero emissions.

Toyota added: “Toyota will accelerate the popularisation of BEVs (battery electric vehicles) with more than ten BEV models to be available worldwide by the early 2020s, starting in China, before entering other markets — the gradual introduction to Japan, India, the United States and Europe is expected.”
