Toyota’s small car range gets enhanced safety

Following its introduction to the Avensis and Auris models earlier in 2015, Toyota is rolling out its advanced Safety Sense systems across its entire range – which means its smallest Aygo and Yaris models now benefit from the technology.

Similar to Nissan’s Safety Shield technology, Toyota’s Safety Sense pack adds a host of severity-reducing, accident-preventing technology, most of which are capable of thwarting low speed collisions.

Available as an option on Aygo and Yaris models for £375 and £400 respectively, the Safety Sense package adds Pre-Collision, which utilises a laser system that warns the driver in the event of an imminent collision. Safety Sense also readies the emergency brakes (Pre-Crash Brake Assist) to optimise stopping distance when you press the brake pedal in a potential collision.

One of the most significant additions is the Autonomous Emergency Braking function, which is capable of automatically braking at speeds between seven and 49mph in order to reduce the severity of a collision. For those who spend a lot of time on the motorway, Lane Departure Alert is also included, giving the driver audible and visual warnings if they stray from their lane.

Advanced safety technology in smaller vehicles is becoming increasingly popular as safety requirements and tests grow more rigorous. Honda has recently introduced a City Brake Active system as standard across its entire vehicle range to ensure optimum safety when driving in the busy city environment.
