Triple win for Mercedes at 2015 World Car of the Year awards

The winners of this year’s 2015 World Car of the Year awards have been announced, with Mercedes taking three accolades including the main award for the C-Class.

The World Car of the Year awards comprises of five categories and is overseen by an international jury made up of 75 renowned automotive journalists from 22 countries around the world.

Mercedes’s latest C-Class beat two other finalists – the Volkswagen Passat and Ford Mustang – to take this year’s main World Car of the Year honour. This victory for the C-Class, alongside all the other accolade winners this year, were announced during the 2015 New York Motor Show.

The jurors for this year’s WCOTY awards commented that: “Taking its design and technological cues from the S-Class, the C-Class employs an all-new aluminium/steel hybrid platform and updated rear-drive powertrains that deliver levels of refinement, luxury, safety, ride and handling that challenge best-in-class.”

Mercedes also won the 2015 World Luxury Car award for its S-Class Coupe, launched in the UK back in late 2014. This is the second year in a row the S-Class has won this particular honour, and this time around it beat the BMW i8 and Range Rover Autobiography Black LWB to victory.

Meanwhile, the all-new Mercedes AMG GT took the World Performance Car of the Year award. The Porsche 911-rivalling coupe defeated the BMW M4 Coupe/M3 saloon and the Jaguar F-TYPE R Coupe to take this honour.

While Mercedes are the only manufacturer to win more than one accolade at this year’s World Car of the Year awards, they weren’t the only German car brand to taste victory. The BMW i8 plug-in hybrid sports car won the World Green Car 2015 award, beating the Volkswagen Golf GTE and the Mercedes S-Class 500 Plug-in Hybrid.

Finally, the 2015 World Car Design of the Year accolade was given to the distinct-looking Citroen C4 Cactus. The Mercedes C-Class was also a finalist for this particular accolade, alongside the Volvo XC90.
