Two ex-Ayrton Senna Formula One cars head to auction

The 1993 McLaren MP4/8A and the 1984 Toleman-Hart TG184 piloted by the three-time world champion will be put up for sale tomorrow at the Bonhams Monaco Sale.

Two Formula One cars raced by motorsport legend Ayrton Senna are set to go under the hammer tomorrow at the Bonhams Monaco Sale.

Lot 119 at the auction is the 1993 McLaren-Cosworth Ford MP4/8A that three-time Formula One world champion Senna used to win the Monaco Grand Prix of the same year.

Not only was this fifth consecutive time the Brazilian took victory on the streets of Monte Carlo, but also his sixth overall, meaning he broke the previous record of five victories set by Graham Hill in 1969.

The MP4/8A still has its original Cosworth-Ford HB V8 engine and McLaren gearbox, and has been extraordinarily well-preserved, still sporting the classic white and red Marlboro-branded livery.

The vendor acquired the car from Rod Dennis, founder of McLaren International, in 2006. Bonhams declined to release the full estimate for the MP4/8A but did confirm that it is expected to sell for a price in excess of £4.38 million.

Alongside Senna’s last Monaco Grand Prix car is his first, as lot 124 is the 1984 Toleman-Hart TG184.

This is the car that used in the 1984 Monaco Grand Prix, when Senna announced his arrival in heavy rain and climbed from 13th to second, with a challenge for victory looking likely before grid-leader Alain Prost had the race cancelled due to poor weather.

The TG184 is fitted with a 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine, producing 600bhp, and has been given an estimate of between £660,000 and £870,000.
