UK drivers prefer black cars

According to recently published data, UK car buyers nowadays generally prefer to get cars in black more than any other colour.

Recent research has found that UK drivers buy cars in black more than any other colour when focusing on a range of different body styles. While white is currently the most popular car colour in the world, British car buyers evidently lean towards a darker finish.

CAP HPI found that in the convertible cars market, black cars accounted for 21.5 per cent of overall market sales. Black cars also make up 28 per cent of sales in the executive car sector, while in the sports car market, 23 per cent of cars sold are black. A quarter of SUV sales are for cars painted black.

Black is “the new white”

A retail specialist at CAP HPI, Philip Nothard, explained that more people are electing to purchase black cars as they hold their value better and aren’t hit as hard by depreciation as cars that are bought in white.

Nothard added: “Black is without doubt the new white. White had become the colour of choice over the past few years but black seems to be back with a vengeance.

“Our data shows that middle-of-the-road cars in black are better at holding their value than any other colour.

“Customers are always likely to settle for the safest option and it would appear that they are thinking about what they can get at trade-in time rather than taking any risks with brighter or whiter paintwork.”
