The number of electrified vehicles on UK roads has increased by over 1,800 per cent in five years, new figures have revealed.
Statistics from the Department for Transport (DfT) has revealed a 1,864 per cent rise in registrations of Ultra Low Emission Vehicles (ULEV) between 2011 and 2016 — with nearly 100,000 ULEVs in the UK at the end of the period.
Data released by vehicle finance provider Moneybarn also revealed the most popular electrified cars on UK roads — with the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV taking the top spot with 7,572 registered by the end of last year.
Following in second was the all-electric Nissan Leaf, with 5,535 registrations and in third place, electrified variants of the Mercedes C-Class with 5,164.
Sales of all new petrol and diesel-powered vehicles will be outlawed by the government in the UK by 2040, in an effort to reduce air pollution across the country.
Simon Bayley, sales and marketing director of Moneybarn, said: “It’s a potentially exciting time for the UK car industry. Electric and alternative energy cars have now moved into the mainstream and are here to stay.
“With the government investing a billion pounds in this sector there is an alignment between manufacturers and government that will hopefully encourage consumer purchasing for years to come."
