Updated Volkswagen Polo unveiled with revised styling and more technology

The popular supermini also comes with more standard equipment than before

Volkswagen has unveiled an updated version of its hugely popular Polo supermini, which gains a revised design and additional technology as standard.

The sixth-generation Polo arrived in 2017 as a larger and more refined model than its predecessor, and has proven a smash hit ever since. With its mechanically-similar twin – the Seat Ibiza – recently getting an update, it’s now this Volkswagen’s turn.

The updated Polo gets styling cues inspired by the latest Golf, with new LED headlights featuring as standard, as well as a light bar that runs between the lights and central Volkswagen badge. This latter feature is likely to only be found on higher-spec trims, though. A restyled front bumper also gets a sharper look than before, while Matrix LED headlights are available for the first time.

Similar changes can also be seen at the rear, with new LED lights being fitted to some versions, along with new central ‘Polo’ lettering beneath the VW emblem. A redesigned front bumper and exhaust garnish trim also help to provide a sportier look.

The latest Polo also brings a range of new driver assistance technology, with Volkswagen saying ‘you’d struggle to find another car in this class that offers such an innovative spectrum of assist systems’. Highlights include an advanced lane keep assist, predictive adaptive cruise control, and a new central airbag between the driver and front-seat passenger.

Inside, the Polo now features digital dials as standard – previously a pricey optional extra – along with a new control panel for the air-con settings.

The latest hatchback also gets a revised trim structure, in a similar vein to the latest Golf and Tiguan. The revised structure will include Life, Style and R-Line grades – the former two replacing current Match and SEL trims. Standard equipment is set to include a touchscreen with Bluetooth, 15-inch wheels and a leather steering wheel.

Style will then bring Matrix LED headlights, additional chrome trim and a larger digital dial system and touchscreen. At the top of the range the R-Line adds sportier styling to the range, along with more attractive 16-inch alloy wheels and LED fog lights.

The same range of naturally aspirated and turbocharged 1.0-litre petrol engines as currently offered are likely to remain.

The new Polo is set to launch later this year, with a price increase expected on top of the outgoing model’s £17,355 starting price.
