Volkswagen has taken the covers off the updated version of the Transporter – the T6.1.

Having been sold over 12 million times since its inception back in 1950, this latest version of the Transporter is the most advanced yet – as it now features Cross Wind Assist as standard, with lane keep assist, park assist and rear traffic alert are also available.

The high-tech trailer assist feature is also offered, which takes control of the parking process when the van has a trailer hooked up.

Volkswagen offers the 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit instrument display on the top-spec Highline model, which can be modified via the ‘view’ button on the multi-function steering wheel. On other options, the analogue dials have been redesigned and are paired to a multifunction display in the middle.

Two new infotainment display options have also been added – the eight-inch Discover Media and the glass-covered 9.2-inch Discover Pro systems – which come with the improved ‘Hey Bulli’ voice control system. Apple’s CarPlay is now available to use wirelessly as well.

In terms of power units, the T6.1 will be offered with a series of turbodiesel engines ranging from 89bhp to 196bhp – with 4Motion all-wheel drive and dual-clutch transmission on offer with select options.

The T6.1 will also be available with an electric powertrain for the first time. The electric motor develops 110bhp and can be paired to either a 38.8kWh or 77.6kWh battery pack, allowing for a range over 250 miles.

Prices for the new model are yet to be announced, with the debut of the updated Transporter expected in the autumn.
