The future lighting setup will include 3D holograms that could project images onto the road, as well as on screens.

Volkswagen has revealed that it is developing new lighting technology that could improve overall road safety and ‘increase personalised vehicle design’.

With the advancements in lighting technology, Volkswagen’s engineers and designers have thought up innovative solutions for lighting functions on current vehicles – including Matrix LED headlights – but these future ideas could improve vehicle safety quickly.

Micro-pixel HD headlights that use up to 30,000 points and LED headlights will be the low-cost alternatives to laser lights, with both of those able to direct instructions and information onto the road – which could further road safety.

These lighting setups will allow for Optical Lane Assist to be introduced, where the headlights will project lanes in front of the vehicle so that they know exactly how wide their car is in relation to the road. This system would help during roadworks and contraflow, as well as with going round corners.

Optical Park Assist could also be a feature introduced to vehicles in the future, as it would show the direction of where the car is going to pedestrians.

According to Volkswagen, Matrix tail light clusters will ‘revolutionise tail lights’, as they would be able to display warning signs as well as the standard brake and indicator functions.

Volkswagen has been testing these new systems at its centre of lighting excellence at the brand’s Wolfsburg plant, which incorporates a 100-metre long room that can be used to simulate different road situations and see how the new technologies would work.
