Volkswagen extends electric car partnership with Zipcar

The car-sharing service is gaining 325 e-Golfs for its London fleet, and they will join the Golf GTEs and Polos currently in service.

Volkswagen has increased the value of its partnership with car sharing firm Zipcar by adding 325 e-Golfs to the brand’s London fleet.

Two years after the companies first teamed-up to introduce the service in the British capital, the new set of e-Golfs will join the current range of hybrid Golf GTEs and petrol-powered Polos that are currently in service.

The new vehicles will form a part of the new Zipcar Flex service, which allows customers to take the cars on one-way journeys by picking the car up and then parking it in a certified Zipcar spot.

Customers are able to book a car via the Zipcar app or online, and from there users can use the ‘drive and drop’ service across London.

Alison Jones, Volkswagen UK director, said: “This is an exciting step for Volkswagen. Thousands of Zipcar members will experience electric driving, perhaps for the first time, and we know they will love the functionality and ease of use that the all-electric e-Golf provides.”

Jonathan Hampson, Zipcar UK general manager, added: “We have always wanted to use the cleanest possible vehicles, which is why we’re incredibly proud and excited to team up with Volkswagen for this zero emissions initiative.

“It marks another step towards our vision for a greener London where car sharers outnumber car owners, making our amazing city an even better place to live for all.”

The e-Golf has a claimed range of 186 miles on an NEDC cycle and can get from 0-60mph in 9.4 seconds.
